Honouring members whose sustained personal service has made an exceptional difference to others.
About the award
Service Above Self is Rotary International’s highest individual service honour. It recognises exceptional humanitarian service carried out through the member’s own time, talents and continuing involvement.
The emphasis is on the person’s service and its effect on others. Holding office alone, or making a financial contribution, does not establish the case for this award.
What makes a strong case?
- Sustained personal humanitarian service.
- Clear examples of what the nominee did and who benefited.
- Evidence that the contribution went beyond the routine responsibilities of a role.
Eligibility and nomination
Nominees must meet Rotary’s current eligibility requirements, including the rules on membership standing, prior receipt and restricted office-holders. Club leaders can bring a proposed candidate and supporting evidence to the District Governor; the formal nomination is submitted by the Governor.
Describe the service, how long it continued and what it achieved. Give specific examples and name people who can speak about the contribution.
